FAQs

1.      What is a Habitat for Humanity affiliate?

An affiliate is a community-based, grass-roots organization that agrees to follow Habitat for Humanity’s principles and policies in the operation of a house-building program in their community.

The affiliate handles both the construction and administration of the program.  The affiliate’s volunteer committees and staff are responsible for selecting families, and planning, organizing and supervising the work of the affiliate.  The homeowners and volunteers contribute to the building of the houses.  Habitat for Humanity International and the affiliates work together as partners.  The Habitat for Humanity International office provides information, training, publications, prayer and guidance and may assist with funding.

2.      How does a Habitat for Humanity affiliate work?

The affiliate follows the mission and principles of Habitat for Humanity.  The six statements of the mission outline how to carry out Habitat for Humanity’s mission at the affiliate level.  Each statement incorporates many of the foundational principles of Habitat for Humanity that are based upon Biblical teachings.

Focus of the mission:

  • To demonstrate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ.

  • To provide a way for sharing among all people.

  • To work in partnership with representative local leadership.

  • To select families in greatest need first, without favoritism or discrimination.

  • To construct simple, decent and affordable houses together.

  • To sell houses at no profit, no interest, and use payments to build more houses.
